Evaluating Alarm Systems 3

Evaluating Alarm Systems Part 3

Choosing the Right Security Company

It pays to do your homework when having a security system professionally installed. You will be trusting the protection of your home, family and valuables to that company. You will want to have confidence in their abilities and qualifications. So, how do you find a qualified and reputable home alarm system company?

Here is your guide and checklist:

1)      Start by asking your friends and neighbors which company they use. Find out the things they did and didn’t like about the companies. Also ask your insurance agent for referrals. They may have a company they affiliate with and offer discounts to subscribing members.

2)      Contact the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (301-907-3202) and your state burglar and fire alarm association for a list of member companies in your area.

3)      Ask your local police department’s crime prevention department about security companies in your area as well as other state licensing agencies such as the Better Business Bureau. You want to find a properly listed company without a history of complaints.

4)      Call several companies and ask these questions over the phone:

  1. How long have you been in business in the area?
    1. i.      Five years or more suggest they’ll be around in the future to continue serving your system.
  2. Are you a licensed low-voltage electrical contractor?
    1. i.      If your state also requires a separate alarm-contractor’s license, make sure they have it. Ask for their license numbers so you can verify the information.
  3. Are you bonded and insured?
    1. i.      Should any damage incur during installation, you will want them to page for the repairs.
  4. Do you conduct background checks before hiring employees?
    1. i.      It is an indication of professionalism if they do, and also an assurance to you about the people in your home installing the equipment and monitoring the system.
  5. Do you sell or lease security systems?
    1. i.      Which choice is better for you and your family depends on your home security needs. (see Evaluating Alarm Systems Part 2 for more information).
  • To avoid unwanted sales calls, do not give out any personal information, i.e. name, address or phone number on the first call. Wait until you have made a decision on which company to choose. A professional company will understand your need for privacy. After all, they are offering security systems.
  • Always shop around. Your first choice might not end up being the best option available.
