Installing a Wireless Alarm 1
Installing a Wireless Alarm System Part 1
With only a few tools and a little patience, you should be able to install a wireless security system. The steps laid out here can give you an idea of what to expect in installing this type of system however the system you choose may be different. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions for a successful and trouble-free operation.
Step 1—Plan
Choose where to place the main control panel inside your home. Many systems combine the CPU and keypad in one unit that can be mounted on the wall or placed on a table for quick access. To ensure easy use, place the control panel near the most frequently used exterior door and near an electrical outlet. Be sure the electrical outlet is not controlled by a switch. If it is, it causes some problems, one of which is someone purposely or accidentally turning off your security system. Also be certain that it isn’t in plain sight from the door or any nearby windows.
Determine where to place the fire and other security sensors. In pencil, write the location on the back of each sensor. Keep the sensors and the control panel in one location when programming the entire system.
Choose a location for your interior alarm siren. Preferably close to the center of the house where it can be heard by everyone, but inconspicuous enough for no burglar to see and unplug. Pick a place where it won’t be muffled by any furniture etc… For some systems, the siren is simply plugged in and can communicate with the control panel through the wiring no matter where it is placed.
Step 2—Install the Control Panel
When you decide to mount the control panel, place it on the wall at a comfortable height making it readable and easily accessed by anyone in the house. For most families, that is about the same height as where you placed the thermostat.
To protect the wires from being tampered with, you will need to run a short length of wire behind the wall from the back of the control panel to the outlet. Most systems use two-conductor 18-gauge wire. First, turn off the power to the outlet. Next, drill a small hole directly behind the control panel and another just below the outlet. Then, fish the wire through the wall and through both holes. If you plan to have the system monitored, you will also need to route two-pair 24-gauge telephone wire from the control panel to the junction box.
Now, follow the manufacturer’s instructions by connecting all of the transformer wires to the control panel and transformer. Install the backup battery, switch the circuit back on and plug in the transformer. Don’t connect the phone line. Have an alarm company technician do this at the same times as programming your control panel to communicate with the central station.
