Installing a Wireless Alarm 2
Installing a Wireless Alarm System Part 2
Installing a wireless home security system is as easy as following 6 steps. For more information, see Installing a Wireless Alarm System Part 1.
Step 3 — Program and Install the Alarm Siren
Using a screwdriver, turn the programming dials on the siren to select a “house code” which you will program into the control panel. Plug the unit in to an electrical outlet which is not controlled by a switch.
Step 4 — Program the Control Panel
The keypad is the only way to program all of the alarm system’s features. Some systems walk you through the process with prompts scrolling across the screen. Before you begin, read the manufacturer’s instructions all the way through and fill out the worksheets included with the system. This will ensure you don’t miss a step or get ahead of yourself. Doing this preparatory work makes the installation go much more smoothly and guarantees that the system will operate when you are done.
The location where you will place the sensor is programmed into the control panel. Your penciled notes described in step 1 ensure that you’ll get the sensors back to their correct locations. This is critical because in case of an actual emergency, you will know where the threat is and who (or what) is in danger.
Step 5—Install the Sensors
Typical door and window sensors have two parts: transmitter and magnet. Mount the transmitter to the edge of the door or window frame and the magnet to the door or window. The alignment of the two parts is essential. Be sure to follow the alignment marks and that the pieces match up accordingly.
Passive Infrared Motion Sensors (PIRs), glass break sensors, and smoke detectors install easily with only a couple of screws and plastic sheet rock anchors. However, these sensors must be placed correctly to gain maximum effectiveness. Be sure to following the instructions carefully.
Step 6 — Test the system
After all the components have been installed, you will need to be sure the system works correctly. Test every sensor and all the functions of the control panel. Test mode on the control panel provides audible feedback as you test each sensor. If you have already hooked up the phone cord and are now being monitored by the central monitoring system, be sure to alert them that you are running a test so they do not alert the police.
