Installing Locks part 2

Dead Bolt Lock

Dead Bolt Lock

The Standard Deadbolt

A standard deadbolt fits like an integral part of the door itself. Most deadbolts make for easy installation. Simply bore a hole through the door’s face and edge, then cut a shallow recess for the bolt’s face plate and a deeper one in the jamb for the strike plate.

Before buying a deadbolt, however, measure the thickness of your door. Some locks can be adjusted to compensate for doors of varying thicknesses, but others cannot. Choose your new lock accordingly.

Steps for installing a deadbolt:

1)      Use the template included to locate where to drill holes.

2)      Make sure the holes are exactly square with the door.

3)      Bore a second hole for the bolt assembly into the door edge.

4)      Insert the deadbolt, mark an outline for the face plate and chisel out a recess so the plate will fit flush.

5)      Mark and cut a mortise for the strike plate. Bore the hole to accommodate the bolt when engaged.
